Making great care possible is only the beginning!

HonorHealth Foundation 2025 Heart Care Impact Report - cardio teamHonorHealth is already sharpening the cutting edge of new cardiovascular treatments and technologies, but a renowned center of excellence requires continued investment in expertise, infrastructure, services and technology.

Those investments are beginning to take shape at the HonorHealth Scottsdale Shea Medical Center. The expanded Heart Care Center welcomes patients, families and the public with a spacious new lobby and registration area.

Its features declare that this is a place that supports healthy living and heart care education, including:

  • Convenient patient registration for visits or procedures
  • Patio and outdoor space for fresh air and contemplation
  • A heart care education center
  • Blood pressure self-monitoring station
  • Digital monitor with educational and wellness messages
  • The Vitality Café, a juice bar and café, with healthy food choices, including anti-inflammatory and heart-healthy options

Also on the first floor, this expansive area adds three new cardiac catheterization labs featuring state-of-the-art technology.

The new Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) offers all the expertise and resources of an inpatient hospital with the convenience and efficiency of an outpatient surgery center.

In the unlikely event of an emergency, the patient is close to the Emergency Department and Cardiac ICU, with all the expertise that may be needed.

The next phase of expansion is a step-down unit for patients who require observation and care but do not require intensive care.

And for our patients who have acute heart problems, many with multiple complications that require round-the-clock, specialized care, the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit assembles the talent and technology to provide the highest level of care available.

All of this and more is made possible by donors like you. And for that, we are grateful!

Your generosity in action

HonorHealth Foundation 2025 Heart Care Impact Report - Dr. Rizik and MarieFor more than a year, Marie had been putting off heart surgery. Her leaky aortic valve made her tired and short of breath. Left untreated, she would very likely suffer a heart attack.

The thought of open-heart surgery held her back — but not out of fear for her own well-being. As the primary caregiver for her husband, who suffered permanent disability from a stroke, she needed to be strong and at her best.

“The aortic valve is the front door of your heart,” explains David Rizik, MD, chief, complex interventional cardiology, pictured here with Marie. “Every drop of blood in your body has to go through the aortic valve.”

Marie’s aortic valve could not close tightly, allowing blood to leak backward into the left ventricle with each heartbeat, a condition called aortic regurgitation. The condition forces the heart to work harder to pump blood with every beat, leading to an enlarged heart and eventually, heart failure.

Previously, the only treatment for aortic regurgitation was open-heart surgery. But Dr. Rizik had been studying a non-surgical, catheter-based technique to treat patients like Marie, who are not good surgical candidates for open heart surgery. The experimental J-Valve seemed to be the perfect option.

In this procedure, the J-Valve is delivered via catheter through the leg. Once in place, the patch is clipped over the leaky valve.

The procedure requires four hands in perfect coordination. Dr. Rizik was joined by Dr. Robert Riley, chief, complex cardiovascular surgery.

“She trusted us,” says Dr. Rizik admiringly. “Marie was one of only a handful in the world.” And Marie is so glad she did.

“I was out of the hospital in less than two days and back home with no pain. In just a couple of months, I was back to running three miles every morning, no more shortness of breath. It was a miracle!”

HonorHealth Foundation is grateful for outcomes like these, the patients who share their stories and the donors who partner with us to save more lives!
